For those suppliers/manufacturers considering export, versions of literature will be required in other languages. It is worthwhile considering this option at the design stage since the graphical design, style and layout can be arranged in a standard format allowing different languages to be over printed – allow an additional 10-15% of space for translated text which will then obviate the need for costly redesign. There is no getting away from the fact that employing a professional translator is well worth the cost. The damage that can instantly be caused to your company’s image and reputation by an inaccurate translation could be significant and take a considerable time to repair. Selecting a translator needs care and thoughtful consideration. The Institute of Translating and Interpreting have two publications - Guide to Translation and Interpreting Services and Translation: Getting It Right – which may be downloaded free from its website.
A quick search on the Internet will reveal that there are many on-line translation services, some free of charge, that may be useful; however, as touched on above, care needs to be taken since literal translation can often distort the original message, sometimes with disastrous results.
