The UK Government provides a number of programmes to help British exporters reach international markets. We have covered its Trade Show Access separately, but other schemes include:

Construction Export Opportunity Alerts

Throughout the world, the UK's embassy-based trade officers source details of key business opportunities in the local markets in which they operate. Many of these opportunities relate to proposed construction developments where the clients, contractors and/or specifiers are interested in receiving proposals from British suppliers and service providers. UK firms can register to receive daily tender alerts, free-of-charge, via the government's Exporting is Great website.

Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS)

This service (referred to in the article Research Export Markets Online) is a chargeable one, designed to help companies explore and research the potential for sales in overseas markets. The programme can provide one-to-one help and assistance through a locally-based International Trade Advisor, who will liaise with commercial staff in British Embassies/High Commissions overseas.

Typically, an OMIS programme would help to:

  • Understand how to do business in the market
  • Have the confidence to explore or expand in a new market
  • Understand the competition
  • Identify opportunities
  • Access information not available elsewhere
  • Gain access to contacts or partners not otherwise accessible
  • Decide on the best market strategy
  • Understand local regulations and standards
  • Overcome barriers to entry or expansion
  • Raise their profile and credibility in the market

The service offers a range of levels tailored to the individual requirements of the customer. Examples of what may be provided are:

  • Level 1 – Small, but significant pieces of work, e.g. where a company requires assistance in contacting potential customers in the Market.
  • Level 2 – Basic Market Research or work to supplement other market-entry activities, e.g. Trade Missions and Market Visit Support.
  • Level 3 – Provision of essential in-market research, contact details and visit itineraries and support.
  • Level 4 – In-depth sector research, in-market assistance and mentoring from overseas trade officers.
  • Level 5 – Comprehensive assistance and research. For example, bespoke event organisation, identification of delegates and event support.
  • Levels 6 and beyond allow assistance to be offered where a customer may have complex and involved requirements.
